Scones and Flatbread in the USA

Many countries have their own variation of what many people know today as 'the scone'.

In the USA for example, especially in some states such as Idaho and Utah the word 'scone' is used often to refer to a flat bread that has been deep fried.

These scones are often served with a dip such as honey or jam and are eaten in a similar way to one would eat nachos.

A Recipe For Scotch Scones

Scotch Scones

Serving Size : 15

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method

1/3 cup Shortening
1/2 cup Oats -- uncooked
2/3 cup Milk
1 tablespoon Baking powder
3/4 teaspoon Salt
1 1/2 cups Sifted all-purpose flour
1/4 cup Currants
1/4 cup Sugar

Sift flour, baking powder, sugar and salt into mixing bowl. Mix in shortening until the mix looks like crumbs. Add in oats & currants.

Mix in milk; stir until dry ingredients are moist. Roll out on lightly floured board or canvas. Knead gently a few seconds. Flatten out to 1/4-inch thickness.

Cut with shaped cutter. Brush lightly with melted butter; sprinkle with sugar. Place on ungreased baking sheet. Bake in hot oven (425 F.) for 15 mins. Serve hot.
